'One Night' - Graphics List / Budget

GRAPHICS LIST
Ana Castanedo made a graphics list which she sent to me to make a budget list from.

GRAPHICS BUDGET BREAKDOWN
After some debate about the quality and size of posters we would need, I worked out that the costing of 22 posters on its own would be a huge chunk of their overall budget. I discussed this with them and they agreed this was way too much, the number of posters was left to be decided at a later date so I didn't include them in my budget but I made it aware to them that that would be the bulk of the cost.

FINAL GRAPHICS BUDGET BREAKDOWN & LIST
The graphics list was also altered and I had to create a fuel canister label now as well. I created this second budget list and breakdown for myself so I could keep track. The total of this breakdown is how much the graphics finally came to.

Below is the to-do list I created of all the graphics I needed to make for 'One Night'. Some things were taken off as they were sourced instead.

Stockton Flyer

Behind this door is the home of the Stockton Flyer. It rises out of the top of this small building in the middle of the high street every day at 1pm and the sound of a steam engine can be heard across Stockton.

I love this rusty door; its textures, shapes, and colours are beautiful. It's just a small hint at the magnificent structure that emerges from the top.

The design was inspired by George Stephenson's Locomotive No. 1 which ran on the Stockton - Darlington line. It's a very crazy steampunk looking automaton by Rob Higgs and Keith Newstead.

'One Night' - Script Breakdown

'One Night' is a film about two girls who become unlikely friends after one of them is raped outside of the strip club they worked in. Over the course of one night, they get very drunk and come up with crazy ideas to seek revenge. The influences for this film include My Own Private Idaho (1991) and Buffalo '66 (1998).
Initially, I emailed this group in a panic because 'Sweet Changeling' hadn't emailed me back for almost a week to tell me whether I made the team or not and I feared I would be jobless. I told them I'd happily work on graphics but I'm also happy to do any other art department jobs as I'd like a variety. A friend of mine from the film course was working on this film and had co-written the script so he helped get me a place on the team as he knows I'm a hard worker, I'm very grateful for him as otherwise, I think they'd have turned me away.

SCRIPT BREAKDOWN

I went through the script highlighting elements that would need graphics much like I had done with the previous script.

'Under the White Sun' - Script Breakdown

I did a quick script breakdown to help me figure out which scenes needed graphics and what they would be. This first look at the script made me think about things such as money (credits) and how that might look in the context of this world. The LCC students hadn't considered this yet so that would be a job for the graphics department.

Winter Wonderland Photoshoot

I was asked by a second year costume student to model a jacket she had made. This isn't something I would normally volunteer for but I thought it could be fun. I offered Natalia the use of my DSLR as she wasn't sure her friend could lend her one. We went to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. I already felt self-conscious just thinking about wearing the costume here with so many people around to see.

I had never modelled for anything before so I felt a bit silly and also suddenly very conscious of where my limbs were and my facial expression. This made it hard to 'act natural'.

This last photo came out with an interesting dreamy haze. My lens was getting a lot of condensation build up because it had just come from the freezing cold ice sculpture room. I think I like this photo the best, to me it feels like it could be from a fairytale and I think that is the look Natalia had wanted to create.

'One Night' - Initial Meeting

The job I had been assigned to on this film was graphics but also making a colour model. This was an unusual request, in their script a building is set on fire and as they obviously couldn't do this full scale and getting permission to use smoke machines and other effects would be a health and safety nightmare we decided a scale model of the building was worth a shot.

Francis Boyle was very helpful in coming up with solutions for filming the model and he suggested burning gels and lighter fluid for creating a small controlled fire. He told us to practice but obviously to be very cautious and do this outside.

'Sweet Changeling' - Initial Meeting / Script Breakdown

'Sweet Changeling' was the first LCC group I emailed. I really liked their moodboards and overall aesthetic for the film (as seen below). The film has a 1950's through to 80's style. The story follows a young ex-pageant winner named Mary Beth who loses her child prematurely and has to deal with this loss as well as with her family.

SCRIPT BREAKDOWN
We were put in charge of the dining room set and making the washing machine so I analysed these sections of the script.

INITIAL MEETING
Francis again helped us with tricks and solutions that would help us reduce the number of necessary props and dressing. 10 sets seemed incredibly ambitious especially with such a small art department from Wimbledon.

'Under the White Sun' - Initial Meeting

'Under the White Sun' is a film about a dystopian future where people over a certain age pay life tax and the world is managed by an aggressive organisation called CSEC. The genre for this film is Sci-Fi and influences included Blade Runner (1982) and The Matrix (1999). I personally felt their script was reminiscent of Logan's Run (1976).

I emailed 'Under the White Sun' about working on the graphics as this is something I was interested in developing as I feel I already have an eye for it. Plus from the examples of their inspirations in the pitch I could tell this would be a fun and creative project. The Production Designer in their team, Sebastian Chan, responded promptly to my email saying they would love for me to help out.
I was one of a few people doing graphics work for the film so I was confident it wasn't going to be too demanding. Jane was our head of department and would be in charge of keeping us on track and informed.

Initial Meeting Notes

The notes below are from our first meeting and a production design tutorial we had with Francis Boyle at LCC. He was incredibly helpful in making clear to the film students what he thought was possible for us as an Art Dept to do and coming up with solutions to possible issues whilst raising others.

After our initial meeting, we created a Facebook messenger group so that we could discuss ideas, keep updated and on target throughout the Christmas break.

Alexandra Palace - Nothing But Thieves

I have been to concerts in Alexandra Palace a few times now and I every time I find myself staring at the building longer than the musician I am there to see. I found the design of the hall interesting and wondered what the inspiration was. I thought ancient Roman or Greek perhaps?

Alexandra Palace was built in the Victorian era and first opened in 1875.

From the last photo it is clear that the columns are in the style of the Corinthian Order.

Bishop Home - Sketch Up

Making a SketchUp model helped me find the rough measurements of the set. For me, this was an important part of the process and I could quickly make alterations if it didn't quite match up to the screenshots I had from the film.

Finals Shots of my SketchUp model -

I really feel like I've developed my SketchUp skills since using it for the first time last year. I had never made skirting board or cornice before, but now I feel like I could almost do it with my eyes closed. I also used the 'follow me' tool a lot more for things like the banister. This was hard to figure out at first but was easy enough to get to grips with after a while messing around with it.

Contextual Studies - Goggle making

For the Unit 6 festival, I designed and made the goggles we would be using for our installation. I knew they could be made easily and in a few pieces out of cardboard. I happened to be inundated with the stuff after my house had bought several desks from IKEA.

Initial drawn designs -

Rather than making them out of three pieces we managed to make them out of two; a front piece and another piece that would block out the light from the sides.

Dan modeling the goggles after assembly -

After this, I then made the viewing holes and passed the goggles on to the other members of my group who were painting and attaching the elastic.

Me modeling finished goggles -

I'm pretty happy with how these turned out considering how simple they were. They fit well and weren't too uncomfortable to wear. Sometimes it doesn't have to be complex, it can be as simple as some cardboard and elastic. Cardboard can be a very useful material and this is a nice reminder of that.

Farley's prop house

We visited Farley with Kerry and were taken on a tour by Francesca Farley, the granddaughter of the founder Joseph Farley.
They hire out antique props which mostly date back from before the early 1900s.
This was such an inspiring place to look around and would certainly help to create an authentic looking set.

Rough Model and floor plan

Looking at my very rough card model I can easily see that the rooms are too small. It is hard to compare to the screenshots as it looks like a wide angle lens may have been used. But this was still very helpful for figuring out big errors.
