'Sweet Changeling' - Jelly Experimentation

Sorrel, Vicky and I decided to experiment making jelly early on because we weren't sure how long they'd keep/how much gelatin we should use/how to put objects inside the jelly.

It's safe to say our first test was a disaster. After arranging the food inside the moulds we poured in the liquid and all the food would move and float around making it very hard to keep them in place. The colours came out great and if we could keep the objects in place I think they would look fantastic.

We all agreed to do more research and tackle the task again later. After doing some research and watching some Youtube tutorials I learned that the best way is to pour in the liquid in small amounts, then put it in the freezer for a few minutes before adding more. I also read a trick to make a more solid ballistic jelly. This made me realise we also needed a lot more gelatin if we wanted these jellies to be sturdy and not fall apart.

The final jellies were a great success due to our research! Picture of the final jellies are on the last page.

'Sweet Changling' - Food Research

I asked my mum about popular dishes from the '50s-'70s and she told me about a facebook page that posts exactly the kind of tacky foods we were looking for. This was a useful research resource, some of them are pictured below but the link is also here: https://www.facebook.com/GetFestivewithFanny/

Sorrel made the moodboard below to help us research what was best for our dining room food. We decided on two or three jellies, prawn cocktails, coloured deviled eggs, a sausage cake thing and a lobster.

'One Night' - Technical drawings and rough model

Vicky drew these up straight after we had come back from surveying the location. This was a good idea because later on, I was struggling a little with understanding my notes.

Vicky also did a quick SketchUp model to see if it looked right in 3D in comparison to the photos.

ROUGH WHITE CARD MODEL
Vicky and I made a rough white card model to check if 1:20 was a good sized scale. It also helped us realise a few mistakes we made and ways we could make it easier for ourselves when doing the colour model. For example, the thickness of the Kapa foam was the same as how far the walls stuck out so we wouldn't need to cut out more pieces and it would look neater.

'One Night' - Location Surveying

Vicky and I went to survey the location of what will be the strip club for 'One Night'.

We decided with the DOP that we would make a model of the building from the wall before the first window to the wall after the window around the corner and only go as high as the window ledge from the windows above.

Ana Castanedo made a graphics list which she sent to me to make a budget list from.

After some debate about the quality and size of posters we would need, I worked out that the costing of 22 posters on its own would be a huge chunk of their overall budget. I discussed this with them and they agreed this was way too much, the number of posters was left to be decided at a later date so I didn't include them in my budget but I made it aware to them that that would be the bulk of the cost.

The graphics list was also altered and I had to create a fuel canister label now as well. I created this second budget list and breakdown for myself so I could keep track. The total of this breakdown is how much the graphics finally came to.

Below is the to-do list I created of all the graphics I needed to make for 'One Night'. Some things were taken off as they were sourced instead.

Stockton Flyer

Behind this door is the home of the Stockton Flyer. It rises out of the top of this small building in the middle of the high street every day at 1pm and the sound of a steam engine can be heard across Stockton.

I love this rusty door; its textures, shapes, and colours are beautiful. It's just a small hint at the magnificent structure that emerges from the top.

The design was inspired by George Stephenson's Locomotive No. 1 which ran on the Stockton - Darlington line. It's a very crazy steampunk looking automaton by Rob Higgs and Keith Newstead.
